Every House Has a Story: It Takes a Village

Zoom Call for Mrs. B.'s Elder Care

The Coronavirus pandemic helped the world see importance and need for community and collaboration. Isolation and social distancing are a struggle for all of us. At MarketPro Homebuyers, we recently experienced the value of collaboration to help a client in need. On a call organized by Gail Hubberman, our Business Development Manager, we highlight how different parties from different professions can work together to help a client.

We know that every house has a story, and this house’s story is that it takes a village working together to provide the best help and support. In this case, the client was 77-year-old Mrs. B. Like many seniors, Mrs. B was struggling finding the in-home support she needed. One person, Paula Sotir, was determined to help Mrs. B.

Care Patrol Connects with Mrs. B

Paula works at Care Patrol, an organization that helps seniors move into independent, assisted, and memory care facilities. She received a call from a social worker at Johns Hopkins who was concerned that Mrs. B wasn’t safe at home. Within 24 hours of that call Paula was at Mrs. B’s home to check on her and see how she was doing. They took all the important COVID precautions. While sitting 6 feet apart in her living room, Paula could immediately tell that Mrs. B had some significant medical issues – she recently had cancer, she was on supplemental oxygen 24/7, and wasn’t able to walk up the steps alone to where her bathroom was.

While her grandson lived there, he wasn’t doing any caretaking duties. Both Paula and Mrs. B knew it was time to go somewhere she was safe, could receive care, and importantly, get social connection. Paula then went back the next day and spent three hours looking at her finances and delaying every bill. Due to her financial and familial situation, the only way to get the help she needed was to sell the house.

MarketPro Homebuyers Offers to Help

Paula, isn’t a real estate agent, so she called her realty colleague Kris Martinson from Cummings & Co. Realtors to consult on selling the home. After assessing the situation, Kris knew this couldn’t be a typical transaction – the grandson didn’t want to move out or cooperate in the process, and Mrs. B needed quick action. She called MarketPro Homebuyers to see if they could help her client, Mrs. B. MarketPro quickly responded and was able to determine the offer value shortly after the call. From there, they started working together to get the house sold. Kris was impressed with MarketPro. While typical real estate transactions have lots of unknowns concerning settlement price, timeline, and deductions, with MarketPro, the offer price is always the final price. This was important for Mrs. B who needed to know exactly how much she was going to be able to get to make educated decisions about where she would choose to go for assisted living care.

“The Village” Rallies to Help Mrs. B.

Mrs. B and Kris knew that the lack of moving fees, closing costs, and settlement fees combined with the fast closing, made MarketPro’s offer the best options. Sandy, one of MarketPro Homebuyers’ premier transaction coordinators, and Gail took the lead on organizing from the MarketPro side. Together, Paula, Kris, and Sandy got to work transitioning Mrs. B to a care facility.

Gail called Paula and asked her, “Can we do this?” Paula said, “We have to do this. I have got to get her out.” From there, things happened fast. Paula handled helping Mrs. B choose and reserve a facility, while Kris and MarketPro ensured the home sale settled fast and helped her move out. They all worked together to offer value and support for Mrs. B in her trying time. As Kris said, “it really was an overall benefit that I was so pleased with”.

The Process

Time was essential. Mrs. B needed to quickly move into an assisted living facility. She couldn’t safely remain in her house because of her significant healthcare needs, while she also needed the settlement proceeds to pay for her care. Rather than making Mrs. B travel to a settlement office, MarketPro was able to go directly to her home for settlement and take all necessary COVID precautions. MarketPro also gave Mrs. B flexibility on her moving date and offered to work on her schedule in case she needed to move faster and wanted extra days to move out. Mrs. B was able to move out of her house and receive the settlement within 10 days, while a traditional transaction usually takes 30 days at minimum.

Everyone Wins

While the team was scrambling to help Mrs. B, her grandson was still struggling to move out. They didn’t know if he had another place to go. MarketPro was proactive to ensure that her grandson had another place to go and was able to move out with dignity. Mrs B. was Kris’ client, but she appreciated MarketPro’s approach to helping the grandson. Kris said, “MarketPro was very sensitive to the situation and it wasn’t just a financial situation for them.  They really cared about how the whole thing was going to come together, and they weren’t just going to kick someone out of the house.” Instead, MarketPro offered the grandson cash for keys, which gave him cash to get a fresh start and find a new place in exchange for moving out peacefully. In the end everyone, including Mrs. B, were very, very pleased with the solution.

The Final Outcome

This was a complicated situation. And there were frequent challenges and problems that arose throughout. But Paula, Kris, and MarketPro all worked together and frequently communicated in order to solve them to make sure the transaction worked for Mrs. B.

Mrs. B is very happy in her new home and getting all the care that needs!
